Dan Baird and Homemade Sin (with Ragged Union) - The Globe Cardiff, 23/07/17

Is this a Tennessee juke joint? No, it's Cardiff. The Globe, to be exact. But with Bristol Americana band Ragged Union in support of Georgia Satellites frontman’s solo project Dan Baird and Homemade Sin, that’s how it feels.

Describing themselves as sleazy alt-rock, the first band of the night are bringing a heady mix of country, soul and rock ‘n’ roll and they aren’t mincing their words. What you see is what you get and they’re wearing their influences firmly on their western embroidered sleeves. The room is full, which says a lot for these boys, with everyone tapping happily to Blackberry Smoke and The Allman Brothers covers, as well as originals from their album Voodoo Smile, that proudly hold their own against the classics. Looking every bit the country-tinged gents and sounding fresh from a bar on Music Row, they’re giving the crowd an undiluted taste of what’s to come

Up next is the mad hatter Dan Baird and his spur-donning band of (mildly) merry men. The pioneer of ‘cowpunk is leading the way with his own project, which is pure and absolute good-time, beer-swilling, bar-brawling tunageWearing his signature top hat, he is at ease, having fun and delivering what a crowd of mostly Satellites fans came for; swagger and attitude wrapped around some good ol’ vintage jamming.

Blending new tracks from his latest album Rollercoaster with old, such as Keep Your Hands To Yourself (how could he not give this one an airing?) It all seems to be slotting together nicely. Nothing new or unexpected will come of this evening, but in such an uncertain world, it’s good to know you can rely on guys like Dan to give a solid, rocking good performance.
